Founded in 1961 as State Electric in Toronto, The State Group quickly expanded to service the commercial, institutional and industrial markets, and established branch offices throughout Canada to better serve its customers.

In the 1970’s, the company evolved into a diversified contracting firm performing complex, time-driven construction projects. Projects ranged from office towers, to hospitals and convention centers for its commercial customers, to sophisticated systems in the Automotive, Steel, Petrochemical, Energy and Food and Beverage Industries on the industrial side.

State’s reputation continued to grow as we began to be known as the pre-eminent contractor for multi-trade services including Mechanical, Millwrighting and Structural Steel installations and are truly one of the pioneers of single source construction solutions.

State merged into Dynalectric in 1973 to facilitate the rapid growth of the company and expand its resources and capabilities. State was involved in several landmark projects including the First Canadian Place, Yonge & Eglinton Center, the Chrysler Truck plant in Windsor, and Stelco Steel in Hamilton.

The firm continued to excel in the 1980’s and was purchased by the management team through a public company in 1988. Notable projects included the Toronto Dominion Center, Vancouver General Hospital, and Ford Motor Company in Oakville and Windsor. The company also expanded its range of services by adding a Technical Services operation, which provides 24/7 emergency response and maintenance services for our clients.

In the 1990’s State became a truly North American company with expansion into the American Midwest and the Caribbean. State was an important part of significant projects such as the Atlantis Hotel and Casino and AK Steel’s Rockport Steel Works. Our quality management system was ISO 9002 registered in 1997 and State was the first multi-trade contractor in North America to achieve this accreditation in addition to earning Ford’s Q1 Award.

The current ownership of State is by the management team together with a long-standing financially stable Canadian company with a strong reputation in the Real Estate and Construction Industry.
